Nathaniel Haggard signed the Declaration of Independence in early 1776 for the colony of Virginia. This was done in support of Franklin, Adams & Jefferson's efforts to win over the 1st Continental Congress.

Child's Memory of Civil War
Bettie Lander was elementary age during the war. She told of her father teaching the children signals on the field bell. Two rings meant hide as fast as you could. Bettie's hiding place was in the corn field. She took the family silver with her as she hid.

Molly Hayes 'Pitcher'
Molly Hayes ‘Pitcher’ 1754-1832 Molly’s true surname was Hayes. In 1775, when America’s fight for independence began, a barber named John Caspar Hays joined the Continental army. His wife, Mary, followed him to cook, wash, and sew for the troops. (Many wives followed their husbands into battle as they feared being left alone in a time of war.) On June 28, 1778, John and Mary Hays were in New Jersey at the Battle of Monmouth. It was one of the longest battles of the war, and perhaps the hottest day of the year. Mary could see men suffering from the heat and grabbed a pitcher. She filled & refilled it with water to run drinks among the men. “Molly!”, “Molly Pitcher!” the yelled out for help. Her own husband fell from this heat. She gave him a drink, tied a wet rag around his head, and moved him beneath a shady tree. Molly then took over her husband’s place behind the cannon. With her dress shirt tied up, she helped the men continue to load and fire the cannon. A witness wrote, “While in the action of reaching a cartridge and having one of her feet as far before the other as she could step, a cannon shot from the enemy passed directly between her legs without doing any other damage than carrying away the lower part of her petticoat.” When others ran in fear from battle, Mary Hays stood fast. She was still there, holding off the British, when General Washington checked the retreat.
Following the Revolutionary War
Nathaniel Haggard, John Strode Sr, John Blakeley and Robert Goodwin brought their families through the Cumberland Gap to varies parts of Kentucky. Strode & Haggard started in Clark County. Haggard's son, David, and Strode's daughter, Letitia, migrated westward to Christian County with their new spouses. Blakeley established a home in Christian County. Goodwin settled in Trigg County. William Bryan (Bryan Station) & Rebecca Bryan's mother was Martha Strode. They were 1st cousins to Captain John Strode (Strode Station)because Martha Strode was his father's sister. William Bryan married Mary Boone (Daniel & Squire Boone's sister). Daniel Boone (Fort Boonesboro) married Rebecca Bryan (William Bryan's sister).

My third children's book is about Daniel Boone. In researching the family genealogy and history, I discovered that our Captain John Strode was a cousin to Rebecca Bryan. His Aunt Martha Strode Bryan was Rebecca's mother. I also learned that Captain Strode stayed at Boonesboro while he built Strode Station. He helped defend Boonesboro from a Shawnee attack. Kentucky wilderness map
This map shows forts & stations in the Kentucky wilderness, 1776 - 1780s. Strode Station was nine hiking miles from Boonesboro (and away from Indian traffic routes like the Kentucky & Licking Rivers). The Strodes and Bryans were first cousins. Boone married Rebecca Bryan. William Bryan married Mary Boone. Captain John Strode was first cousin to the Bryan siblings. Daniel and Mary Boone were siblings. A path was beaten between Boonesboro & Strode's Station, known as Strode's Trace. It is still visible today. Strode Station was the beginnings of Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky. Some of the early legislative meetings were held at Strode Station. Both Squire and Daniel Boone attended these meetings. The Boones were the first in Kentucky to make a motion for the area to focus on horse breeding.

Strode Station sat between Bryan Station & Fort Boonesboro. This map shows just how close Bryan Station, Fort Boonesborough, Strode's Station were. All three stockades were attacked many times by British led Shawnee and Simon Girty between 1777 and 1783. William Bryan built Bryan Station w/his brothers. John Strode built Strode Station. The two men were 1st cousins. William's mother, Martha Strode & John's father, Edward Strode III, were both fathered by Edward Strode II. There was so much foot traffic between Boonesboro & Strode's Station that their beaten path is still visible today and is called "Strode's Trace".

Look closely at this map. You can see how close Boonesborough, Strode Station, and Bryan Station were to one another. Just north of Strode Station is a stream/branch named 'Strode de Branch' (a tributary off the Kentucky River).
Bryan Station
Strode Station, Bryan Station, & Boonesborough were within hiking distance of one another. The inhabitants of the three stockades knew each other and many were related. Mary Boone Bryan was Daniel Boone's sister. Rebecca Bryan Boone was William Bryan's sister. William Bryan & Rebecca Bryan Boone were cousins to John Strode through their mother, Martha Strode Bryan.

Fort Boonesboro
Each stockade experienced numerous attacks during the Indian Wars of 1776-82. The attacks were led by Simon Girty. The British Army gave the Indians guns, scalping knives, and ammunition. A brave was paid for each scalp he took to Fort Detroit. Boonesborough survived two major sieges.

Blacksmith
Horses were important transportation and work agents. It was important that they get the best of care. Carriages would be repaired at the wheelsmith shop. Horses went to the blacksmith to be reshoed.
Gristmill
Cornmeal and flour couldn't be purchased at a store. Farmers took their corn and grain to the local gristmill to grind it into a cookable subtance.
1838, Trail of Tears
Native American Indians were forced to move from their eastern homelands by President Andrew Jackson's administration to present day Oklahoma. Poorly clothed and ill fed, many Native Americans suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation. Of the 16,000 marched across the country, 4,000 perished. It was a campaign of our government to eradicate the civilized tribes east of the Mississippi and take their land. The 12,000 remaining Native Americans relocated in Oklahoma. Tribes relocated west in the 1830s were Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole. The Trail of Tears procession passed through Christian County. Two respected Cherokee chiefs (Whitefly & Fly Smith) are buried by the Little River, KY Historic marker #1042 (East 9th Street by the Little River, Hopkinsville, KY). CLICK photo to learn more about Native American Indians. The taking of land & property from the Indians was foretold by Shawnee Chief Tecumseh 1768-1813.

Notice the white specks to the right of John William Strode Lander's stone. I can't see them when I hold the photo in my hand, but they show up in the scanned copy in the computer. I am doing genealogy searches and find that my ancestor, John Strode Sr. (Capt.), 1729/30-1805 founded Strode Station, and that memorial sign referred to him. Is there a connection?
I just left a comment but see we both descend from John Strode Sr (Capt.). My line is from his daughter Nancy Strode who married Abijah Brooks. John Strode Sr. is both my 6x great-grandfather and my 5x great-grandfather because I am related to him on both my grandmother and grandfather's sides of the family. I am new to genealogy so all of this is very interesting! My grandmother and father did all of the research previously.

I'm a DNA match, but don't know which line downward. Ryan or Crook?
I am wondering if anyone can help me. My mother's family has been trying to decipher our Strode genealogy since the 1930s and 40s. I have posted the letters between family members on my tree (Wadell family) in ancestry.com. I would love to figure this out for my 88 year old mother.
Her grandfather was John Porter Strode of Philadelphia (married Susan Russell) b. 10/12/1889, d. 4/17/1023
His father was Porter Strode (married Isabella Crowe Haverstick) b. 3/31/1824 d. 12/24/1907
Then the trail is a little murky - we think his father was born about 1792 - one set of letters the family indicates this father may have been born in Virgina and became a doctor. His wife was a Davis (prominent Philadelphia family. They both died young, according to these letters.
If anyone has any suggestions on how I can trace back the line of Porter Strode, I would be very grateful - many thanks - Grace Wadell

My first cousin 5x removed, Elmaza Fletcher married Samuel Boone (Thomas, Squire III, Samuel, Squire, Sr., George III). They had 6 bouncing baby boys. When she died in 1854 in Montgomery County, KY, Samuel married Kate Lander in Clark County, KY and moved to Missouri where they had two more children. Captain John Strode is my 5x great grandfather, Im a direct descendant of his son Stephen who relocated to Missouri. Steven Strode had a son named Jacob Starnes Strode. Jacob had a son named John Pledge Strode. John had a son named Henry Claiborne Strode. Henry had a son named Willis Jennings Strode. Willis has a son named Willis Jennings Strode Jr. , which is my dad. My name is Andrew Chase Strode and I Live outside Knoxville, Tn.
